Our People
Iris Moeller

Professor Iris Moeller is a coastal geomorphologist. She studies how physical and biological processes interact at the coast, especially in the intertidal zone — the area between high and low tide.
She uses these insights to work with others, both within Geography and beyond. Her goal is to develop integrated solutions for coastal areas that protect people from flooding and erosion, while also supporting the many benefits that healthy ecosystems provide. She has a particular focus on coastal wetlands and other dynamic landforms that benefit humans and nature.
A key component of her work involves monitoring long-term coastal change over decades and centuries. She also explores how we can use this knowledge to adapt to environmental change. This includes challenges like climate change, rising sea levels, and more frequent or intense storms.
Alongside her role at the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water, Professor Moeller leads work in two EU-funded projects, REWRITE and NATURESCAPES. REWRITE focuses on coastal rewilding of intertidal seascapes, while NATURESCAPES explores nature-based solutions and how green spaces connect across urban areas.
